PHOTOTOXICITY

The term phototoxicity indicates the toxic response that is elicited after the first exposure of skin to certain chemicals and subsequent exposure to light. This test makes it possible to identify compounds that are phototoxic in vivo after systemic application and distribution to the skin, as well as compounds which could act as phototoxicants after topical application to the skin. It is a validated assay (OECD 432).
